About Us

Established in 1998 in west central Illinois, and dubbed “Terry & Kay’s HideAway” by Terry’s father, it offers 128 acres of rolling hills, woods, pastures, and 40 acres of tillable crop land. Though not as rocky as their native Scotland, this land is perfectly suited to a Fold of the rugged Highlands, which we began assembling in 2011 from championship bloodlines.

Our Sr. bull, Skye High Capone was the 2015 National Western Stock Show Reserve Grand Champion and has sired both National Western and Washington State Fair Grand and Reserve Grand champions. Our Jr. bull, Almosta Farm’s Baron was selected the 2020 Sr. show bull for the American Highland Cattle Association. Check them out on the “Our Cattle Fold” tab.

HideAway Farm is now home to about 35 pure breed AHCA Registered Highlands, (with about 12 calves annually), 2 Hereford Cows we crossbreed with our Highland bulls, a flock of Guinea fowl and 7 Honeybee colonies to help keep the planet pollinated. HideAway Farm is a member of the American Highland Cattle Association, (all HideAway Farm breeding stock is AHCA registered) and the Midwest, North Central, and South Central Highland Cattle Associations.

In 2012 Terry was certified through the Quality Beef Assurance program sponsored by the American Highland Cattle Association and we offer a complete farm to table 100% Highland or Highford (50% Highland 50% Hereford) all natural grass fed beef raised in an open pasture, low stress environment. Our cattle are grass fed/grass finished and pasture raised naturally without steroids, growth supplements and un-needed antibiotics creating a lean, flavorful wholesome beef.

For more information about the low fat, high protein qualities of Highland Beef please see our “Highland Beef” tab.

Since 2013 HideAway Farm has been honored to participate in the Chicago Scots annual Highland Games with a cattle display and educational materials about the Grande Olde Breed! This past year WGN TV selected our cattle display to be part of their morning new report about the games, which have grown into the largest bagpipe competition in North America held each Saturday before Father’s Day in June. See our 2023 Highland Cattle Ambassadors and display with the below pictures and at: https://wgntv.com/video/weekend-break-37th-annual-scottish-festival-highland-games/8743405/

Closer to the farm we are also a proud participant in the Central Illinois St. Andrews Society Highland Games, which is held each May at the Sangamon County Fair Grounds in New Berlin, IL. While much smaller than the Chicago edition, a wonderful celebration of the Scottish Heritage featuring almost all the same events in an event you don’t want to miss. Visit us and the Coo’s to have your own Highland cattle experience and learn more about these magnificent creatures at either location!

Most recently, August of 2023 HideAway Farm published the North American English Revised Edition of the long out of print and beloved book “A Keen Eye” For more information about this wonderful Highland Cattle book see the tab titled, “A Keen Eye” “Suil a ghleidheas selbh” – “A keen eye keeps the cattle”
